Things To Not Do When Claiming to Run a Punk Site:

3. Don’t bias your output to please potential investors.

2. Don’t steal other people’s news/post old news.

1. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SEEK OUT AN ENDORSEMENT DEAL FROM HOT FUCKING TOPIC.

that is all.

Also I’m writing a comic…and a western based on a Murder by Death record…maybe I’ll share some of it along the way.

I can only speak for myself (I hear Josh is snowed in and unable to communicate? He’s also a teacher and probably has cooler things to deal with), but I’ve been busy and I TOLD YOU GUYS that I’d probably forget about this thing. My lack of posts don’t mean my life has been any less interesting than it was before. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. For instance, I went to Chicago and fell in love. That rules.

As broke and tired as I am, I’m stoked on the following.

Harvest of Hope Fest

Please please please check this Fest/cause out. The three day multiple stage festival was created to help benefit and raise awareness for the Harvest of Hope Foundation (www.harvestofhope.net), a nonprofit charity organization that provides educational grants, scholarships, emergency financial assistance, and service oriented aid to migrant farmworkers and seasonal farmworkers all accross the United States. The primary mission is to help generate a higher level of social consciousness regarding the multifaceted life and hardships of underpaid and overworked seasonal farmworkers, migrant farmworker and undocumented farmworkers. Furthermore, it emphasizes not only on migrant farmworkers but also focuses on being family friendly (All Ages Event!) as well as being environmentally conscious. It’s seriously a great thing that I’m stoked to be involved with. The fest happens March 12-14 in St. Augustine, FL. Lurk the site for ticket info.

I am constantly amazed by the hearts that go into this 3 day weekend and privileged to be involved with such an amazing team of people and friends. It means the world that art and music and people can come together on a grassroots level and not only raise awareness, but directly help thousands of people.

On a side note, please check out the Vinyl Auction over at Limited Press (brought to you by Punknews and Paper + Plastick) to benefit those affected by the recent earthquake in Haiti.

Also, I am never mixing beer with whiskey ever again. Party clean!

My dudes in Blacklist Royals played a really awesome song in a bathroom once. I love them for it. We’re putting out their new record, it’s gonna melt hearts.

Mitch Clem really needs to produce work on a more regular basis…and he should be paid for it. That is all.

(tried to post an example as to why this assertion should be justified…but there was no way I could fit it to this column width AND make it readable….yer just gonna HAVE to peep it at the source.)

I went to “The Swamp” today to do a few promo shots for my bro’s in Anchor Arms. They have a new album coming out shortly (which I’m doing the cover for too! Watercolors! And stuff!), so that’s gonna be awesome. The shoot was fun, but I don’t give a shit about football.

ALBUM REVIEW: Collapser by Banner Pilot

Posted in Uncategorized on January 3, 2010 by thoughtgrenade

CollapserSo I dug out this review the other day. For reasons that shall remain unnamed (or perhaps named later under the influence of alcohol) it never saw the light of day. However, given how much raving is being done about this record on *insert punk news/reviews website*, I figured I’d put my two cents in. -J-

Whereas once upon a time Fat Wreck Chords was a creative Mecca for United States punk rock, long since past are the days when every buzz worthy band that specialized in playing two chords over and over again had that immediately recognizable vinyl record logo on all of their releases. In recent years, due either to economic slowdown within the music industry or a legitimate desire to craft the best records possible (or, more likely than not, both), Fat have throttled down their operations to the point that a new band signing might happen once or twice a YEAR as opposed to once or twice a month. By the transitive property, however, this should probably mean that when they actually do get off their collective asses and sign some new blood, it’s probably worth a listen. The Sainte Catherines, Dead to Me, American Steel and The Flatliners are more than enough to prove this theory, which is what lead to me to Collapser, the Fat Wreck debut of Minneapolis’ Banner Pilot.

To be honest, my immediate reaction to album opener “Central Standard” was “oh…they signed D4 again…” It would be impossible to review this record without mentioning the very obvious similarities to Minneapolis’ OTHER beloved drunk punks the Dillinger Four. Sure these guys sound a little younger and a lot less reckless, but if D4 never existed then neither would this record. Now, this having been said, the album still manages to put out some legitimately dance worthy pop-punk jams here.

The guitar driven antics of “Farewell to Iron Bastards” and “Losing Daylight” have all the requisite energy necessary to get you off your ass and into the pit, but in terms of anthems or even singles really, the album really doesn’t have a standout track that I can really determine. The band manages to churn out a solid half hour of pop-punk goodness that I’ve no doubt transfers well to a live setting. I just can’t for the life of me see myself playing this record at all a year from now.  Don’t get me wrong, these guys definitely have the potential for greatness, but I guess the main problem is, like I implied, there isn’t really a need for them right now. While I’m not saying every single band needs to be entirely unique and add something everlasting to the American punk tapestry, this particular record doesn’t really bring all that much to the table. Still, a solid release, if not particularly memorable.

(P.S. what I actually LIKED this year)
